Tortured Christian Perseveres in Love for the Persecuted
A Christian man in northern Mozambique remains faithful to Christ after extreme torture. In 2019, Felizardo Lourenco, now 40, was captured by Islamic State insurgents in the region. While in captivity, Felizardo was tortured severely and set on fire when he would not renounce Christ. He required months of medical care after the attack and still has health complications. Because of Felizardo’s disfigurements, his wife left him. The global body of Christ helped Felizardo get medical care, housing and a business producing charcoal, which he uses to support his own children and some orphaned family members. Despite everything he has endured, Felizardo said his suffering has given him a vision to serve persecuted Christians in northern Mozambique. He explained that churches continue to be burned, Christians continue to be killed and many new believers experience persecution after accepting Christ.
