Increased Penalties for Apostasy

[215] prayers in [15] nations have been posted for Christians in Mauritania.

Christians in Mauritania are worried about recent changes to the laws regarding religious conversion. On April 27, the Mauritanian National Assembly approved changes that increase the possible penalty for apostasy. Previously, Muslims convicted of leaving Islam were given three days to return to the Muslim faith. That opportunity is no longer provided for certain offenses, and the death penalty is now mandatory in the case of “blasphemous remarks” and “sacrilegious acts.” The changes also allow a prison sentence of up to two years and a fine of up to 600,000 ouguiyas (about $17,100) for “outrage to public decency and the values of Islam” or “the breach of prohibitions prescribed by Allah or the facilitation of their non-compliance.” Though no Christian convert from Islam has yet received the death penalty, these changes could have serious consequences for new Christian converts. “The government seeks to win favor of other Muslim nations by setting an example of how Islamic governments should act,” said VOM’s Deputy Regional Director for Africa. Pray that these legal changes will not cause Christians to fear and will not deter Muslims from seeking the truth.
